New Movie Review: Angels & Demons

What do you get with you mix a little National Treasure, some 007, and throw in a dash of religion? You get the new action-packed religious thriller, Angels & Demons. This Ron Howard directed movie could almost be considered a sequel to the 2006 blockbuster The Da Vinci Code.

When Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) is called to Rome by Vatican Police, he thinks it is about his petition for access to the Vatican archives. Upon arrival, he meets scientist Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer) and learns of the resurgence of the Catholic Church’s oldest adversary, the Illuminati. This ancient secret organization, which included the likes of Galileo, has obtained anti-matter from Vetra’s lab and kidnapped four Cardinals, who were all favorites to become the new pope.

The Illuminati’s plan is to publically assassinate the four Cardinals, which represent the four elements, and destroy the Vatican by detonating the anti-matter. With help of Camerlengo Patrick McKenna (Ewan McGregor) and Commander Richter (Stellan Skarsgård) of the Swiss Guard, Langdon must follow a trail of archaic signs and symbols, through crypts and catacombs, to stop the murder of the Cardinals and the Vatican before time runs out.

Like The Da Vinci Code, this movie will hold your attention, from the first scene to the end credits. This movie, with all of the eerie catacombs and gothic cathedrals, doesn’t leave much to be desired visually. There are enough high-speed chases, death-defying stunts, and startling gunfights to keep you on the edge of your seat. A few scenes in this movie may be a little disturbing to a younger audience, so I would not recommend bringing your children.

I would highly recommend this to anyone who is a fan of National Treasure or likes having to solve puzzles. This movie will keep you guessing right till the very end. You are sure to walk out of this film saying, “I wanna do that.”

I give it 4 out of 5 chalices.
