The Tools Every Gardener Should Have

As much as we may enjoy it, gardening is hard work; digging earth, moving rocks, planting, pulling weeds, it can be exhausting. This is particularly true if you don’t own many gardening tools, or the right tool for the right job. Not having the right tool for the job makes the work even harder.

As an example; I just recently purchased a wheelbarrow. What I had been using was an old garbage can. I would fill the can with my garden waste and then drag the can around. It was exhausting. And the first day I used my new wheelbarrow I though I was in heaven; the work was that much easier.

The right tool makes the difference. If you’re a backyard gardener like me, take a look at the following list of tools every gardener must have:

Wheelbarrow: Save your back, get a wheelbarrow.

Garden Spade: These are essential for digging out sod, edging, and digging holes. Garden spades are immediately recognizable by their square heads and short handles.

Garden Hoe: A garden hoe really makes doing the initial weeding much easier, they are also great for chopping up dirt chunks when it comes time to turn over your garden beds.

Garden Rake: These rakes aren’t like the rakes you use to rake leaves off the lawn. These rakes are made of steel and are very strong. These are great for removing weeds and leveling out the garden bed before planting.

Hand Trowel: A good hand trowel is absolutely necessary for planting and transplanting.

Digging Fork: Not only is a digging fork essential for turning over the compost pile, but digging forks are also necessary preparing the garden area for planting. Digging forks are not pitch fork. A digging fork is much heaver and much more rugged.

Pruning Shears: Pruning is just part of gardening and a good pair of pruning shears will make the job easy and quick. You will need to occasionally sharpen your shears so get a pair that permits easy sharpening.

Garden tools can be expensive so if you can’t get everything you need right away, don’t worry. Just get what you can when you can. Just make sure you a purchasing a quality tool. A good gardening tool should last indefinitely. A quality tool may cost a little more, but it’s worth it because you will have it forever.

There are tools that every gardener should have because the right tool for the right job makes the work as easy as it can be. And any help in the garden is always appreciated.
