Nightmare Before Christmas 13th Anniversary Soundtrack

Nightmare Before ChristmasThe newest edition of Tim Burton’s “Nightmare Before Christmas” soundtrack, which is being re-released for its 13th anniversary (spooky!), has a pretty brilliant approach this time around: get major label artists to record versions of songs from the movie. That idea worked out perfect as artists Marilyn Manson, Fiona Apple, She Wants Revenge, Fall Out Boy and Panic! At the Disco all lend a hand to celebrate the movie being re-released into theatres.

The only downfall of this 2-Cd set is the fact that there is only one song from each band, but the rest is filled with the whimsical, yet eerie music and score from the movie itself, done by the legendary Danny Elfman.

Both Marilyn Manson and Panic! At the Disco offer their own versions of the classic “This is Halloween,” and neither of them disappoint. Manson, who is a perfect fit to cover a song from this movie, rattles off a heavy, uber-creepy edition, while PATD opt for an over-the-top, theatrical side of the song. Both songs are incredible in their own way.

Fiona Apple remakes “Sally’s Song” and pulls it off really well. The track is very slow and very emotional, as would be expected from Apple. She Wants Revenge covers “Kidnap the Sandy Claws,” as originally done by Oogie Boogie’s disciples Lock, Shock and Barrel. This song is surprisingly good – very upbeat and fluid, due largely in part in SWR’s penchant for electronica. Finally, Fall Out Boy weigh in with their take on "What’s This.” This song works so well because frontman Patrick Stump sounds almost identical to that of the Pumpkin King Jack Skellington.

If that were the entire album, then that would still be worth it, but of course it is not. The first disc is rounded out by the original versions of each song covered, and then there is still over an hour of more songs and original score from the movie on disc two.

If you have seen the movie, then you need to own this CD. It is a great soundtrack to any Halloween party. This is a necessity for fans of this movie, as upon first listen you will get chills down your spine and goosebumps up your arms – it’s that good.
