Blood Stained Love Story By: Brian Campbell |
| |
Blood Stained Love Story marks Saliva’s fifth record, and their return to rock music prominence. They had sort of fallen to the wayside with their release of Survival of the Sickest, due to the lack of airplay, and needed something to bring them back to the frontline; Blood Stained Love Story is just that.
In my opinion, this is their best record to date, right on par with their major label debut Every Six Seconds. They have gotten back to what they were originally doing so well on Every Six Seconds and their sophomore release Back in Your System: writing concise, spot-on melodies. They seem more focused now than ever, as their music sounds so mature, yet still wide-eyed and youthfully driven. You can just hear how serious they sound on this record.
It’s also nice to hear that they abandoned much of the pseudo-cocky, somewhat arrogant southern swagger they had on Survival of the Sickest. That market has been tapped already, and you do not want to find yourself going to the same well record after record - 3 Doors Down anyone?
With Blood Stained Love Story, Saliva is getting back to what brought them to the dance – songs like Broken Sunday and Never Gonna Change. Broken Sunday is probably the catchiest track Saliva has ever written, and is clearly the frontrunner for best track on this album. Never Gonna Change and Going Under come complete with soft touches and virally melodic choruses. Ballads; these are what Saliva needs to keep doing to continue to stay current, writing them on par with almost anyone in the game right now. The album is really powered by their popular single Ladies and Gentleman. I heard this track on the radio, and I knew I would be buying this album. It really is the classic Saliva sound.
This record is the complete rock and roll package. The lyrics are more involved and more personal than they have been in years, not to mention that the hooks are the tightest they’ve been since Every Six Seconds. No matter how catchy Saliva’s music is on this record, they still have something for the hard rock fans, like tracks King of the Stereo and Black Sheep.
Anywhere you look on Blood Stained Love Story, no matter if it’s a ballad or a hard rock tune, you will find big time guitars, shredding solos, precise drumming and talented vocals and harmonies from frontman Josey Scott.
