“Surf’s up”

Surf's UpWhen all is said and done Surf’s up, stands up to the comparisons and criticisms while paving a different road all it’s own. What arises is one of those truly rare pieces of cinema that is equal parts an adult film that kids can enjoy and a kiddie flick that adults will love, too.

For the past few years, it seems the “in” thing to do in Hollywood is for stars to provide voiceovers for the ever popular and cash laden animated feature. Surf’s up is no different boasting the voice talents of Jeff Bridges, Shia LaBeouf, and Napoleon Dynamite…er…Jon Heder.

A young starry eyed penguin, Cody Maverick, leaves the confines of his home in the Antarctic and travels to Hawaii to compete in the “Big Z” Memorial Surf off. In true “Rudy” fashion, adversity besets our protagonist. After some prodding, introspection, and mentoring by the former surfer guru “Big Z” is former idol, Cody experiences an expected epiphany.

What is most refreshing about Surf’s up is that the “message” of the film comes across as heartfelt and strong. While not overbearing, the message of friendship over winning at all costs comes across easily to youngsters in the audience.

Hopefully, you’ll have HD TV to watch this one. This animated feature is enthralling in its portrayal of the ocean and its inhabitants. What makes Surf’s Up so refreshing is that it’s shot in a pseudo-documentary style.

Though there is some crude and slap stick humor, there’s not much the little ones couldn’t watch on their own. All in all, a good family film fun comes to the beach and parents will find it safe to go back into the animated waters.

Surf’s Up deserves a thumb’s up and earns 4 out of 5 surf boards.
