Make a furniture throw

You can spend hours searching for that perfect throw or you can go to the fabric store and take your pick of perfect fabrics and colors and make your own in a few hours time. Follow the steps below to make your own throw.

• Step One: The first step is to choose the right fabric for your throw. This largely depends on what size you wan the throw to be. Keep in mind that most fabrics come in widths of 55-60 inches so plan around those dimensions to save time and money. The average throw is 60 inches by 55 inches. A length of 1 1/2 yards of fabric will give you plenty of material.

• Step Two: With the fabric chosen, look for backing material. Usually, a light cotton fabric will work best. With all of your material selected, start by laying the fabric face down on your work table. Trim the edges so they are even and use a yardstick and fabric marking pen to measure and mark the proper dimensions onto the fabric.

• Step Three: Cut your backing material to the same dimensions. If your fabrics meet evenly along the selvedge edges you are ready to go to the next step. If not, you will have to cut your backing material 2 inches wider than the fabric to allow for hemming.

• Step Four: Use an iron to push each raw fabric edge under about 1/2 inch. Press that edge under once more and pin all of the hems into place making sure that the pins are all perpendicular to the edge of the fabric. Next, use your sewing machine to stitch the fabric hems and then the backing hems a little less than 1/2 inch from the fabric edge.

• Step Five: Place the backing fabric over the throw fabric with the wrong sides facing and pin them together. Now, sew the pieces together along the stitch line made in the previous step. Your throw is ready for your favorite chair or sofa.

Making matching pillows or additional throws for gifts is quick and easy and relatively inexpensive when compared to those found in department stores. Plus you get the satisfaction of doing the work yourself.
