Billy Talent - Billy Talent 666

Billy Talent
Billy Talent 666
Warner Music Canada

These guys have long since been a band that has steadily flown directly under radars, but still remain conversational in most music circles. Billy Talent want you to know what it is like to experience them performing live, and we all actually get that opportunity with their latest release, Billy Talent 666. This compilation is everything you could want from Billy Talent. It is a live CD, it is a live DVD and it is also backstage footage shot by the guys themselves.

The CD portion is their full live show, recorded at the Phillipshalle in Dusseldorf, Germany on February 20, 2007. This is one of the more special live records I have heard, and I have heard a lot. The only live records I ever gave any credit to were those of the Cure, since most live records are just filler and fodder for the fans until the band feels like recording something new. 666 is something entirely different. Billy Talent wants you to experience them live and if you are the type of fan who is having reservations about headed out to see this group the next time they are in town, give a listen to this record. The live performance housed on the CD portion alone should win you over, and if it doesn’t you probably don’t appreciate good music and good musicianship. If the incredible, spot-on performances of Devil in a Midnight Mass, Standing in the Rain and the Ex don’t immediately sway you, then Billy Talent’s versions of Fallen Leaves and Try Honesty should, not to mention the encore of the shore. The sell out crowd in Germany demands the guys return to the stage, and that they do with a rousing go around of Nothing to Lose, River Below and Red Flag.

Just bear in mind that the CD portion is not where it stops, oh no, it carries onto the DVD section, which is actually three different shows. These shows were the afore mentioned Germany show, as well as two others: February 17, 2007 from the Brixton Academy in London, UK and June 1, 2007 at the MTV Rock Am Ring Festival in Nurnburg, Germany. For some reason, each time Billy Talent goes into Red Flag on either Dusseldorf or MTV Rock Am Ring, I get chills. It’s just something about seeing so many people into what the band is doing that gets me.

Look at it this way, for what you’ll pay for this; you’re getting a smoking deal. You will get a DVD with three separate concerts and a 17 track live CD. That’s a hell of a combination, and trust me, Billy Talent does not fail to deliver.
