Exercise Your Best Friend; It Will Be Good For The Both Of You! By: Jonathan Bille |

With spring upon us, you don’t need to be told that it’s time again for you and your family to start getting some physical exercise. But there may be a family member who you’re forgetting about who needs exercise just as much as you do. Who is that family member? The faithful family dog.
You may not think about it but your dog, young or old needs regular exercise to stay healthy and happy. Just like humans, dogs need daily exercise, and just like humans they rarely get it. Like humans, dogs can fall into a sedentary routine very easily. Lack of activity can contribute to a variety of health problems and depression.
The good news is that when you exercise your dog, you’ll also be getting your exercise as well as spending some much needed time with one of your best friends. Here are some great ideas to keep your dog in tiptop shape:
· The daily walk. What dog doesn’t go crazy when it’s time for a walk around the neighborhood? Regardless of how busy you are, you need to make sure that you’re walking the dog at least once a day, preferably in the morning. A morning walk will not only get in some much needed exercise but will also help your dog relax during the day.
· Let’s play fetch. All dogs love to play fetch, even if they don’t want to give up their prize after they retrieve it. Playing fetch with the dog for five to ten minutes a day is a great way to sneak in a little exercise with something that the dog loves to do.
· Tug-a-war. Most dogs have a special toy that they desperately want you to try and take away, while they try preventing you from getting it. The simple game of tug-a-war is one of the ways you can get your dog active without even leaving the home.
Please note: Although it’s spring and the temperature is on the rise it’s a good idea to make sure that the time you and your best friend spend out time is right for the weather. If the dog is shivering it’s best to go in doors. And be sure to clean the dog’s feet, there is a lot of salt on the ground at this time of year and that salt can burn your dog’s feet. So make sure to wipe them good after your stroll through the neighborhood.
