Spring Cleaning Continues: Finishing Up

This second part of our Spring Cleaning article series covers the rest of your home moving onto the furniture and other décor. You don’t have to do everything in this order and you may find you’ll combine some of these tasks with ones in the previous article as you move through each room.

Some tips for overall cleaning include not overwhelming yourself with cleaning the entire house in one day. Take it slow and work room by room. Choose to spend a day at a time on each room or combine smaller rooms into one day. It typically won’t take you the entire day to do a room but splitting it up over a couple weeks or so will allow you to work comfortably. If you’re the type who wants it done as soon as possible, you’ll probably plow through the house in a couple of days. It’s important to remember to do it at a pace you know will allow you to get it all done and not get discourage by the thought of the work involved.

Linens, Window Treatments & Wall Hangings
Wash or dry clean all bed linens, throw blankets, pillows, rugs, draperies, etc., in your home to remove any dust and grime that has collected in them and give them a refreshed look. If some items cannot be easily cleaned, use the brush end of your vacuum to spruce them up. Make sure you get both the front and back of curtains.

Dust and wash blinds. Remove pictures, mirrors, etc., from the walls dust them front and back and wash glass with a non-streak glass cleaner.

Cupboards
Remove the contents from your cupboards, (hint: this is the perfect to sort through and remove anything that you no longer need) and clean the contents where necessary. Vacuum any debris from inside your cupboards and cobwebs that may be up in the corners then wash both the inside and outside.

Beds
Beds get their own category for Spring Cleaning because taking care of their mattresses properly will prolong their use. The trick is to flip and rotate your mattress so it doesn’t develop an imprint of your body. Remove and wash all of your bed linens, vacuum the mattress and box spring, (dust will settle there through the linens) remove them from the bed making note of the direction they were placed and continue vacuuming all supports, headboards, end boards, (whatever comprises your bed) vacuum the floor underneath your bed and the end that faces the wall. All of this is easily done while the mattresses are off! When you place your mattresses back on the bed first turn your box spring so the end that was at the head of your bed is now at the foot. Box springs cannot be flipped so you’ll only turn it. Mattresses can be turned and flipped. You’ll want to turn it so the top end that was at the head of your bed is now at your feet but the side to the right that faced up is now on the left side facing down. To accomplish this first flip the mattress over from side to side then turn it around from the ends and lay it back on top of the box spring.

Dressers
Clean out your dresser drawers (great time to organize by removing unused clothes). Empty each drawer of its contents, vacuum out the dust and dirt that have accumulated there (you’ll be surprised at all that you find), and then sort and rearrange the contents back into them. For a little added freshness, add scented drawer liners or sachets, or replace old ones.

Furniture
Wash down furniture using a damp cloth on wood and solid surfaces and carefully clean upholstery and fabric according to their care instructions. Move furniture away from their usual location and vacuum underneath and around them. Dust and grime will accumulate on the backs of dressers, couches, pianos, etc. even if they’re up against a wall.

Non-Living Spaces
Aside from the rooms of your home you typically occupy, there are spaces you don’t spend much time in or they’re your storage and utility rooms like closets, attics and basements. It’s a good idea to vacuum these spaces to remove dirt and debris, cobwebs and insects that have all accumulated there. This will discourage the proliferation of unwanted insects and small animals.
