Internet is Second Battleground Between Russia and Georgia By: Jonathan Bille |
| |
Hostilities between Russia and Georgia evidently hit a breaking point which has caused Russia to invade their neighbor. Although it’s a development that is hardly getting a mention in the news, Russia’s aggression against Georgia is signal that the model of preemptive war instituted by the US is now being adopted by nations around the world. And as the bombs fly and tanks approach the border, there is another battlefield in this latest aggression, the internet.
Georgian officials are reporting the many government and Georgian run web sites have been under cyber attack since the beginning of Russian aggression. The main targets of the attacks are Government sites and news sites.
Although nations such as Estonia have been attempting to aid Georgia in defending against the cyber attacks, Russian attacks still continue making the dissemination of news and information almost impossible.
This latest development is the unwanted proof of how important and necessary the internet has become to modern life and freedom. And it also raises the question of how seriously the United States is taking internet security when it comes to fighting off the cyber attacks that bombard US websites on a daily basis.
The current Chinese internet blackout is another example of how important the internet has become in the free exchange of information of freedom loving people. China in direct opposition to their agreement with the Olympic board is blocking access to websites that they believe are not in China’s interest.
One thing is for sure, the internet is now a new battlefield that is sure to be a major part of future conflicts between nations around the world. As we become more and more dependant upon the internet the more the internet will become a target from our nation’s enemies.
The internet is the most efficient tool in the dissemination of information and the promotion of freedom. Those opposed to that freedom, within their own country and among their neighbors will certainly be carrying out attacks on the internet to stop that flow of information.
