Lawn Cutting is Killing the Environment! By: Jonathan Bille |
| |
Grass cutting is just part of the regular lawn care routine. Perhaps you cut the lawn a few times a week to keep it looking its best. But when it comes to air pollution, did you know that cutting your grass for one hour is the equivalent of driving 100 miles in an automobile?
A study done in Sweden in 2001 showed that pollution from a gas powered lawn mover that ran for an hour created the same amount of pollution as a car that took a 100-mile ride.
They discovered that gas powered mowers, both riding and push mowers, produce significant levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. It is these hydrocarbons that are a major contributor to the Global Warming problem. So what is the solution?
The easiest quickest solution is to switch from a gas powered mower to an electric mower or an old fashioned un-powered push mower. If you have a extremely large lawn one consideration might be to break up the lawn into sections using a different mover for each section, as example: the area immediately around the house cut with the up-powered push mower, outside the immediate area to use the electric mower, and the areas out of reach for the electric to use the gas powered mower.
The real goal is to reduce your use of the gas powered mower. Even cutting your use of the gas mower in half represents a huge difference in the amount of hydrocarbons you’ll be producing from cutting your lawn.
Another alternative that is just starting to hit the market is solar powered lawnmowers. Although they solar powered mowers are slow in getting to the market, there are units available for sale. If you have a big lawn to care for, you may want to take the time and do some research to see if solar powered mowers are available in your area.
Your lawn in your pride and joy, but what a sad truth to think that all that mowing is actually causing a great deal of damage to the environment. And now that you know, it’s up to you to make the difference. Remember, the less you use your gas powered mower, the more your doing to help the environment. It’s time to change the way we live, which includes the way we care for the lawn.
